GRC ‘22 was an incredibly memorable event, by no small standard! Our player numbers increased from 16 in 2020 ... to 28 in 2021 ... to a whopping 40 in 2022!!! Special thanks to everyone who has helped grow the GRC year over year, and to all the now lifetime GRC members. This was a very special year as it was the first year of 4 unique teams all competing for the rights to be called, GRC champions of the year.
With the increase in player numbers we had the opportunity to split the total player field into 4 teams of 10 men, making the daily points all the more valuable - while raising the competitive stakes - as only 10 players would end as GRC 22 Champions . This also allowed for friend groups to unite, forming set core teams that compete for the GRC Championship year over year. The goal is to grow and add players to each of these teams, through recruitment for the GRC 23 and beyond. The 4 teams were ... The OG’s - Captained by Maxx Mamula (Black)
Putt Pirates - Captained by Pierce Azarcon (Pastel Blue)
The Daddies - Captained by Zach Pecyna (Navy Blue)
The Bogeymen - Captained by Wildon Deslauries (Red)
While the team names may change year to year, the core players will remain static - with strategic player additions, growing knowledge of optimal pairings and daily format success only raising the level of strategy and competitive fervor for GRC ‘23 and beyond.
Day 1: 2-Man Scramble
Day1 of the GRC was played at Escena Golf Club, with the format being 2-Man Scramble. The round started as most Palm Desert rounds do ... sunny and 75. But at about the 9 hole mark for most of the pairings ... Gale Force Winds hit the GRC! I’ve never experienced anything like it, as gusts of up to 50 MPH slammed Escena GC. The players fought through, holding onto their clubs and their points .. what a battle. We had SEVEN matches decided on the last 2-3 holes ... as it was a Day 1 we will never forget ... Ultimately The OG’s narrowly squeaked out two wins, each on hole 18 to take a full 5 points on Day 1.
After Day 1, the GRC score was..
The OG’s - 5
Putt Pirates - 3
The Daddies - 2
The Bogeymen - 0
Day 2: Best Ball
Day2 of the GRC 22 was at our favorite place in Palm Desert... Desert Willow - Firecliff Course. Once again, SIX matches came down to the last two holes! The Bogeymen clawed their way back and The Daddies took 3 points as well! The OG’s won 2 matches on holes 17 & 18 to maintain their GRC 22 lead. Going into Sunday with 10 points available per team - it was anyone’s game!
After Day 2, the GRC score was..
The OG’s - 9
The Daddies - 5
Putt Pirates - 3
The Bogeymen - 3
Day 3: Singles
Day 3 of the GRC was filled with early runs and late pushes! As always the GRC came down to a few breaks one way or another. Right out of the gates the Bogeymen and Putt Pirates took 2 and 3.5 points respectively, while The OG’s then tied their first match and lost the second .. leaving the scores at the following through the first 4 matches of the Final Day ...
OG’s: 9.5
Bogeymen: 6.5
The Daddies: 6
Putt Pirates: 6
Matches 5 & 6 saw the Putt Pirates secure 3 full points! Taking points away from the OG’s and putting them in contention for the GRC. The GRC 22 came down to the fate of match 7 & 8 ... where in Match 7, Maxx and Henry came in clutch for The OG’s securing a full 2 points for The OG’s. The Daddies now became the only team able to catch The OG’s (12 points) - and they would need to go 6-0 over the final 3 matches to tie and force a playoff. The Putt Pirates then came in hot in Match 8 with a 2-0 sweep over The Daddies ... securing the GRC 22 Title for The OG’s! Through Match 8 The GRC 22 was ...
OG’s: 12
